About the Item:

With its woven gold- and silver-tone metal body and sculptural Lucite handle, this Majestic handbag was equally as suited to cocktail parties in the 1950s as it is for weddings today. For Lily, though, this bag is inseparable from Happy Isles. "This guy was our workhorse in the store. We displayed earrings on top of it. We laid necklaces on top of it in our case. But then when we moved from our original Happy Isles location in Hollywood to the one we're in now, our display area changed and this guy was just hiding in the back of the store forever. I brought it back out because I felt like she really deserved her moment." Lily already owns an almost identical version—"That's my wedding guest bag"—so she's ready for this one to find its next home. "It's a perfect little bag to wear as a wedding guest."

About the Label:

Founded by Russian-born inventor and metalworker Nathan Kasdan, Majestic Metal Specialties became one of America's foremost makers of woven metal handbags, Lucite purses, and vanity cases from the 1920s through the 1950s. Though manufactured in Connecticut, the company maintained a Fifth Avenue address. Majestic's sculptural "basket" bags became some of its most recognizable designs, prized today for their intricate metalwork and distinctly mid-century glamour. In one of fashion history's more surprising footnotes, the same company also manufactured aircraft components during World War II.
