About the Item:

A wide Marithé + François Girbaud wrap belt in tobacco-brown fabric, embellished with metallic beading, crystals, and flashes of pink and gold sequins, and finished with long leather ties. Joanna remembers shopping at the label’s store on Wooster Street in SoHo and wearing this piece over long cotton dresses. "I loved wearing it over a long cotton dress, tied at the back or to the side. It wasn’t meant to cinch the waist—it was more like jewelry for the hips."

About the Label:

Marithé Bachellerie and François Girbaud began working together in Paris in the late 1960s and became pioneers in the transformation of denim, helping industrialize the process of pre-washing and artificially aging jeans before they were sold. They established Marithé + François Girbaud in 1972 and continued experimenting with construction, washes, and silhouette, introducing their influential baggy jean in 1978 and later developing innovative laser treatments for denim. By the 1980s and ’90s, the French label had become an international phenomenon, particularly influential in American streetwear and hip-hop.
