About the Item:

A vivid red Bottega Veneta dress from the 2010s, during Tomas Maier’s tenure at the house. The sleek, sleeveless silhouette is set off by an extraordinary deep square neckline: intricate red lace appliqué is layered over a pale blush inset printed with delicate lace-like motifs, creating a trompe-l’œil effect in which the real and rendered decoration seem to merge. The dress was a Christmas gift to Joanna from her husband, who she believes bought it at Bottega Veneta in Dallas. “I thought it was a phenomenal art piece,” she says. “Around the décolleté, it looks like crochet. Part of it is crochet, but part of it is painting.” Joanna wore the dress just once.

About the Label:

Bottega Veneta was founded in Vicenza, Italy, in 1966, establishing its reputation through exceptional leather craftsmanship and its signature intrecciato weave. Tomas Maier became creative director in 2001 and spent 17 years at the helm, reviving the house around an ethos of discreet, logo-free luxury. Under Maier, Bottega Veneta expanded well beyond leather goods into ready-to-wear while retaining an emphasis on craftsmanship, exceptional materials, and quietly sophisticated design.
