About the Item:

Purchased for Ivy Getty by her grandmother, the late style icon Anne Getty, around 2013 or 2014, this black Alexander McQueen dress has the sharp, engineered simplicity. What drew Ivy most was its transformable construction. “The zipper unzips so you can wear it almost as a T-shirt, and then make it a shift dress—it’s like a two-in-one!,” she says. It was also, she notes, one of the pieces she wore often “before I was being photographed in any capacity,” mostly to family occasions, which gives it a more personal history to the piece. With its shoulder epaulets, clean line, and utilitarian edge, it captures the kind of quiet ingenuity Ivy has always prized.

About the Label:

Under Sarah Burton, Alexander McQueen retained the house’s razor-sharp construction while softening some of its severity with a new elegance and wearability. In the early 2010s—when this dress dates from—Burton was refining a vision that balanced tailoring, utility details, and femininity in a way that felt intelligent rather than ornamental. Pieces like this, with their disciplined silhouette and subtle transformability, reflect that moment well: clothes designed with the precision of couture, but made to live in. It’s a quieter kind of McQueen perhaps, but no less thoughtful for it.
