From the Closet of: Joanna Czech

Label: Chanel by Karl Lagerfeld

Era: Fall 2008

Size: 36 / Small

About the Item:

From Chanel’s Fall 2008 collection, this long knit cardigan is cut like a streamlined coat, with a high collar, concealed front zip, patch pockets, zippered cuffs, and a tonal double-C worked subtly into the upper sleeve. Joanna bought it years ago—she remembers it being either Barneys or Bergdorf Goodman—with a very particular scenario in mind: “I always thought I was going to wear it at the lodge, watching the skiers,” she says. “And since I bought it, I never went skiing—or watched anyone ski.” Instead, it became an everyday layer in Dallas. “In Dallas, it was a little coat. In New York, it was a sweater.”

About the Label:

Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel made knitwear a cornerstone of the house from its earliest years, embracing soft jersey and cardigan silhouettes at a time when women’s fashion was still dominated by far more restrictive clothes. Karl Lagerfeld, who took over Chanel’s fashion collections in 1983, spent decades reworking those signatures—tweed, quilting, pearls, the double-C, and, especially, the cardigan—into increasingly modern forms. This Fall 2008 piece turns the Chanel cardigan into something closer to a sporty sweater coat, complete with functional zips and a remarkably discreet tonal logo.
