From the Closet of: Gigi Burris

Label: Hats by Eddi -The J. L. Hudson Co.

Era: 1960s/1970s

About the Item:

A classic mid-century pillbox hat in rich red silk velvet, distinguished by its beautifully constructed pleated sides and softly gathered crown. “This is just begging for a Christmas party,” says milliner Gigi Burris, who particularly admires the hat's architectural construction. “I love the lines of this. It's almost a pillbox, very straight lines, and looks like it's been made much like a pillbox with these pleats around the side.” The velvet is gathered across the crown before being rolled neatly into the sides, a thoughtful detail that speaks to the craftsmanship of traditional millinery. Originally sold by Detroit department store J. L. Hudson Co., the hat is a festive example of mid-century American style.

About the Label:

Hats by Eddi was a millinery label associated with Detroit's J. L. Hudson Co., one of America's great department stores. Founded in 1881 by Joseph Lowthian Hudson, the retailer grew from a small clothing shop into a 25-story shopping landmark occupying an entire downtown city block. By the mid-20th century, Hudson's was celebrated for its extensive fashion departments, elaborate window displays, and holiday traditions. Women's hats occupied a prominent place in the store, with dedicated departments for everything from tailored daytime styles to more elaborate creations. The downtown flagship closed in 1983.
