About the Item:

From Hermès’s Autumn/Winter 2021 collection, the Tea Time Carré 70 appealed to Ivy Getty for both its whimsy and its versatility. Designed by Jonathan Burton, with a royal couple taking tea on horseback amid a field of hearts, it has the storybook eccentricity she gravitates toward. “When you fold it up, it can just look like a polka-dot scarf...I'd wear it in my hair, on my bag, even as a necklace.” True to form, she has strong opinions on how not to style one too, disliking the overly perfect way scarves are sometimes wrapped around handbag handles: better, in her view, for it to feel “casually around,” a little undone. It is exactly the kind of object she likes best—practical, playful, and open to improvisation.

About the Label:

Few houses have elevated the silk scarf quite like Hermès, whose carré—introduced in 1937—occupies a category almost unto itself, part accessory, part collectible artwork. Long produced in dialogue with artists and illustrators, the scarves often carry miniature worlds within them, balancing wit, storytelling, and exacting craft. Jonathan Burton’s Tea Time design belongs to that tradition, with its whimsical equestrian motif nodding to the house’s riding heritage while embracing the surreal charm that has long animated Hermès scarves. In the Carré 70 format—lighter and more playful than the classic 90—it also reflects the house’s talent for making even its most storied codes feel fresh.
