From the Closet of: Gigi Burris

Label: Dorothy Bullitt

Era: Mid-Century

About the Item:

A striking vintage hat in a rich oxblood shade, this sculptural design combines molded felt with sumptuous silk velvet arranged in a turban-like silhouette. What makes the piece particularly special is its unusual construction: the felt appears to have been molded by hand, with the silk velvet arranged over a grosgrain foundation to create its intricate folds. “The way this hat is made is super interesting and certainly not something I've seen in modern-day millinery,” says Gigi Burris, who admires the complexity of the technique. Made by Dorothy Bullitt of Chestnut Hill, Pennsylvania, the hat also reflects an era when independent milliners flourished in towns and cities across America. “It's very cool to see not only who made them, but where they were made,” Burris adds.

About the Label:

Dorothy Bullitt was a celebrated Philadelphia-area fashion retailer whose business began in 1916, when she and her twin sister sold hand-knitted sweaters in Bay Head, New Jersey. She later established boutiques in Chestnut Hill and Ardmore, Pennsylvania, catering to generations of fashionable Main Line women and debutantes. Among her customers was a young Grace Kelly, who modeled in the store's country-club fashion shows before becoming a Hollywood star and princess of Monaco. At its height in the 1950s and 1960s, the business maintained an extensive millinery department, while Bullitt's buyers made frequent trips to New York to source the latest fashions. The business remained a fixture of Philadelphia society until its closure in 1990.
