2020s Silvia Tcherassi Quilted Crossbody Bucket Bag NWT
From the Closet of: Ivy Getty
Label: Silvia Tcherassi
Era: 2020s
About the Item:
About the Garment: Part traditional mochila, part jeweled fantasy object, this embellished Silvia Tcherassi bag appealed to Ivy Getty for its bohemian exuberance. Patchworked from contrasting printed textiles—polka dots, geometric motifs, painterly florals—and finished with sequins, grosgrain bows, and a wide striped shoulder strap threaded with paillettes, it has the layered, collage-like sensibility she gravitates toward. Designed by the Colombian-born Tcherassi as a high-fashion riff on the handwoven mochila bags of the Wayúu community, it preserves the relaxed bucket silhouette of the traditional form while heightening it through ornament. “I love to wear these types of bags when I’m going to any kind of music venue type of thing outside,” Ivy says, imagining it for exactly that sort of free-spirited occasion. Though she never quite wore this one, she was drawn to its boho sensiblity.
About the Label:
Colombian designer Silvia Tcherassi has long drawn on the visual and craft traditions of her native country, and her embellished mochila bags are among her most distinctive expressions of that. Recasting the traditional handwoven Wayúu mochila—a bucket-shaped bag rooted in Indigenous Colombian craft—through sequins, mixed textiles, and couture-like ornament, Tcherassi transforms a vernacular form into something fashion-forward without losing its spirit. It is a high-fashion riff, yes, but one grounded in cultural lineage, which is precisely what gives these bags their charm.
