A wide Marni belt in dusty mauve suede, finished with tonal stitching and an oversized oval buckle featuring a colorful photographic print framed in sparkling crystals. Joanna remembers this as an older Marni piece, dating to a period when she was “crazy about Marni.” Though she isn’t generally a big belt wearer, she would use belts like this to give shape to the voluminous dresses she favored at the time, wearing them loosely at the waist rather than tightly cinched. “I was going through waves of more bravery,” she says of her more adventurous Marni years.

Founded in Milan in 1994 by Consuelo Castiglioni, Marni became a cult favorite for its cerebral yet playful approach to color, print, proportion, and texture. Castiglioni built the house around an idiosyncratic idea of femininity, favoring unexpected combinations and offbeat silhouettes over conventional polish. Francesco Risso took over as creative director in 2016, carrying that spirit forward with an increasingly experimental approach to the house’s signatures.
