From the Closet of: Gigi Burris

Label: Miss Margo

Era: 1960s

About the Item:

A spectacular example of vintage featherwork, this Mrs. Margo hat combines iridescent peacock feathers with vivid flashes of orange and green, finished with a sumptuous silk velvet ribbon. “They don't make silk velvet like that anymore. You cannot find it,” says milliner Gigi Burris, who believes the hat was a gift from Rebecca Gardner of Houses & Parties. Burris particularly admires the intricate arrangement of feathers, a technique that has inspired her own millinery designs. For her, the piece is “a fantastic example of featherwork technique that you rarely see in millinery. It's super couture.”

About the Label:

Miss Margo was a mid-century millinery label known for its fashionable women's hats during the 1950s and 1960s. Its designs ranged from structured pillboxes and cloches to velvet toques and feathered cocktail hats, often distinguished by elaborate trims and unusual textures. Surviving examples suggest the label was sold through American department stores and specialty boutiques, with some hats bearing Italian manufacturing labels. Though little is known about the company's origins, its designs reflect the exuberance and craftsmanship of mid-century millinery.
