About the Item:

A classic example of 1950s tailoring, this two-piece Janet Sloane suit has all the polish of midcentury dressing. Cut from an exceptionally thick, substantial wool-blend tweed in a mélange of brown, cream, and gray, the set has a wonderful weight and structure that helps it hold its shape. The fitted jacket features a high neckline, structured shoulders, three-quarter-length sleeves, and a row of dark buttons down the front. The coordinating skirt has a slim, straight silhouette. Worn together, the pieces make a wonderfully sophisticated ensemble, but the jacket would look equally chic styled separately with trousers or jeans.

About the Label:

Janet Sloane was a midcentury American fashion retailer whose Madison Avenue shop specialized in high-end, custom-made women's clothing. By 1960, the establishment had attracted a loyal clientele, with Sloane herself interviewed by The New York Times about changing fashions and shopping habits. The Janet Sloane name also appeared on garments sold in Greenwich, Connecticut, reflecting the polished, tailored style associated with East Coast dressing during the period.
