Joanna bought this Junya Watanabe duster at Barneys New York around 2003 or 2004, making it one of the oldest pieces in her closet sale. Cut in black cotton, it has a fitted long-sleeved bodice that gives way to a full, softly pleated skirt, with intentionally raw, frayed edges and layers of fabric tracing the open front and neckline. Joanna wore it frequently, styling it less as a dress than as a lightweight coat. “I wore it a lot and always got so many compliments,” she remembers. “I never really wore it as a dress. For me, it was more of a coat.”

About the Label:

Japanese designer Junya Watanabe began his career at Comme des Garçons after graduating from Bunka Fashion College in Tokyo in 1984, working under Rei Kawakubo before launching his namesake collection within the Comme des Garçons universe in 1992. Watanabe became known for approaching clothing almost like an engineer: familiar garments are cut apart, reconstructed, pleated, distressed, layered, or manipulated into unexpectedly complex forms. His work shares Comme des Garçons’ taste for black and deconstruction, but developed a vocabulary distinctly his own—one particularly interested in pattern cutting, textile experimentation, and transforming everyday clothes through construction.
