These glossy orange patent-leather pumps come from Phoebe Philo’s Resort 2017 collection for Céline and were styled with Look 3 of the collection. The sculptural design—sometimes called the High Throat 90 or Soft Ballerina—features an almond toe, a gathered, elasticated high-cut vamp, and a dark cone heel. For Joanna, they were as much collector’s object as shoe. “I just loved old Céline. Whatever was available, whenever it was available, I was buying—even the weirdest things,” she says. “These were really a collector’s item more than anything else.” She owns the same pair in white leather, which she’s keeping; the brilliant orange patent pair—nicknamed her “orange peppers” by her husband and a friend—are the ones she’s finally ready to part with.
