About the Garment:
“This piece is probably one of my favorites—in fact, Bill Cunningham photographed me at a fashion show wearing it when he was doing a story on coats,” Dee says. “I just thought, Bill Cunningham likes my coat enough to photograph it—what could be better?” Designed by American sportswear pioneer Bonnie Cashin, the long coat pairs a tan leather bodice and sleeves with a dramatic raccoon fur skirt and hood, finished with Cashin’s iconic toggle-style closures. The design was also featured in Vogue in September 1968 (photographed by Irving Penn)—making Dee’s Cunningham moment feel like a fitting continuation of its fashionable life.
About the Label:
A pioneer of American sportswear, Bonnie Cashin designed clothing for women on the move. Working primarily from the 1950s through the 1970s, she became known for relaxed silhouettes, ingenious utilitarian details, and signature hardware—most notably the bold toggles and turn-lock closures that appeared on her coats, capes, and leather pieces. Cashin’s designs balanced practicality with elegance, helping to define a distinctly American approach to fashion that favored comfort, versatility, and ease. Her work remains celebrated for its ingenuity and enduring modernity.
