From the Closet of: Lily Kaiser

Label: Jean Allen

Era: 1960s

Size: Extra Small

About the Item:

This chocolate brown chiffon evening gown features a softly ruched bodice with delicate shoulder straps, a flowing pleated skirt, and an elegant draped panel that sweeps across the back, finished with velvet trim. Lily immediately fell for its theatrical silhouette. "This dress is stunning and if it fit me, I would keep it in my closet," she says. "It's an incredible voluminous silk chiffon skirt—worthy of the Metropolitan Opera. Then you turn it around and there's this gorgeous swoop design element in the back with a little velvet trim on top." The dress also introduced her to a label she hopes to discover more of. "It's a label I actually meant to research more because the dress itself is so beautiful," she says. "I know this designer must have made more gorgeous pieces, and I need to find them."

About the Label:

Jean Allen was one of Britain's leading names in occasion dressing throughout the 1960s and '70s. Founded by designer Jean Parry-Billings in London in 1959, the label earned a loyal following for its beautifully made cocktail dresses and evening gowns. Hallmarks of the house included graceful pleating, fluid draping, luxurious fabrics, and flattering silhouettes that balanced couture-inspired elegance with everyday wearability. Stocked by retailers including Harrods and Peter Jones, Jean Allen remains sought after.
