About the Item:

Woven with an allover butterfly motif, this sleeveless silk caftan features a high keyhole neckline, deep side slits, and a rich mauve lining that peeks through at the arm openings and hem. Lily found it in the early years of Happy Isles and originally intended to sell it in the shop. At the time, she made a habit of trying everything on before buying it for the store to better understand the fit—and immediately changed her mind. "The silhouette on is really a sleek, fluid column," she says. "It made me feel really tall." It quickly became her go-to caftan for Passover and accompanied her to baby showers and rehearsal dinners before she finally decided it was time to pass it along. "The color's so pretty," she says. "I love the little butterfly print. Anything with a butterfly print, I feel like is just a good vibe."

Founded in New York in the 1940s, Malcolm Starr became one of America's leading ready-to-wear labels for elegant occasion dressing. The house was celebrated for its glamorous cocktail dresses and eveningwear, often crafted in luxurious silks, vibrant prints, and richly embellished fabrics. Throughout the 1960s and '70s, a number of notable designers—including Bill Tice, Youssef Rizkallah, Carol Horn, and Elinor Simmons—designed under the Malcolm Starr label, helping establish its reputation for sophisticated, beautifully made clothing. Today, vintage Malcolm Starr remains a favorite among collectors for its exceptional quality and enduring glamour.
